Genesis Community Arts Project (GCAP)

Masikhule, meaning “Let us grow”, is a community-driven orchestra launched on 18 December 2022. It operates under the umbrella of the Genesis Community Arts Project (GCAP) which is a non-profit organization dedicated to the holistic development of children through the arts.

Founded on 25 August 2016, GCAP focuses on empowering youth from previously disadvantaged communities across Cape Town, including Parkwood, Lotus River, Grassy Park, Ottery, Steenberg, Retreat, Lavender Hill, and surrounding areas. These neighborhoods face many social challenges, and GCAP believes in using creativity and mentorship to offer a pathway to hope, growth, and greatness.

Masikhule is GCAP’s latest initiative, building on the success of their established wind band and drum line. As a multigenerational community orchestra, Masikhule welcomes musicians of all ages and skill levels. Beyond performance, the orchestra fosters mentorship with each member encouraged to teach and inspire the next generation, helping GCAP work toward its vision of a 200+ piece orchestra and a thriving, music-filled future.

Together, we aim not only to enrich our communities with sound, but to create lasting opportunities through music, education, and shared purpose.
